The Eye Test

We reccomend having your eyes tested every 2 years. our patients are notified of when they are due for a new check up to ensure the health of your eyes

A sample test

An eyetest is carried out by an optometrist to determine if a patient requires spectacles, and also to check the health of the eyes.  Any eye problems the patient is experiencing, e.g. headarches, blurred vision, will be discussed.  Family history of any eye disease is also recorded.  At the end of the eye examination the correct prescription for spectacles is determined, and the patient will be advised on any issues affecting the health of their eyes.

  • First is the vision check; where the optometrist gets a reading of the patients starting level of vision , without spectacles and with their present pair.

  • Next the optometrist works out a prescription with a retinoscope and trial lenses.

  • The next test is the subjective test which refines the previous result with the full cooperation of the patient; each eye tested separately and then further refined to have both eyes balanced

  • Next the health of the eye is checked using an ophthalmoscope and a slit lamp . The various parts of the eye are examined as well as the veins and arteries as this is the only area of the body where the veins and arteries can be examined without surgery. Signs of cataract ; glaucoma ; macular degeneration ; to name but a few. If the optometrist detects anything untoward , they will send the patient to their doctor, or the Hospital or to an ophthalmic surgeon.

  • Other tests that might be done would include Pressure checks, a visual field test which can give valuable information on the peripheral area of vision . Both these measurements are useful for indicating Glaucoma
